About Rona Joubert

Rona made a remarkable recovery, but a student claimed that books were a burden!

1. What is your favorite Yoga style and pose?
I enjoy a traditional vinyasa flow with variations according to my mood on the day. Favorite pose varies between lizard/pigeon or a headstand, depending on how balanced my day is feeling.

2. How did you get interested in Yoga?
I became very ill about 2yrs ago, after going through some traumatic life changes, and I wasn’t allowed to do any form of cardio exercises. This was the perfect opportunity for me to try yoga, something I have always longed to do. I was hooked after the 1st class and completed my 200hr TT 6months later!

3. If you could compare yourself to an animal, which would it be and why?
I would love to say a swan… But I am a true Taurus and some days I feel about as graceful as a bull on my yoga mat!

4. What do you like to do in your free time?
I love hiking in the mountains, long walks by the ocean, reading a really good book.

5. What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
I was teaching at a local Christian school. Checking homework books before my teens go home for the day. One 16yr old girl’s book was missing.. Called her over to ask what happened to her book.. Instant blank look, but smoke was coming out her ears, thinking of a quick excuse… Then… “Miss…. Miss, Jesus took it away from me cause it was a burden…” 🤣😂 Student – 100 ; Teacher – 0 !!!

6. What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
Down To Earth by Zac Effron. I loved the trailer and was totally hooked after watching only the intro of the 1st episode! Such a heart warming series, inspired to see celebrities walking into a deeper truth and caring so much about people and the environment.

7. What’s your favorite drink?
A biiiiigggg cupacino!!

8. If a penguin wearing a sombrero walks through your front door, what does he say and why is he here?
“Ola Chicka! I am here to take you to our secret beach in Baja, where we belly flop into the pool on purpose and drink cherry flavored mojitos all day long! 😎”

About Nadya Booyse

Nadya is a serious wolf (who likes comic relief), so keep her fed and she will be your best friend!

Nadya Booyse

1. What is your favorite Yoga style and pose?. My favourite Yoga pose (at the moment) is fish and restorative backbends. My favourite yoga style is just a combination of vinyasa and classic Hatha.

2. How did you get interested in Yoga?
I found yoga after my eldest was born and on a life long search for strength to be myself, as well as anxiety and anger management. Yoga gave me community, and all the aspects within myself to stand up and step out of things that were no longer serving me. It is an ongoing process

3. If you could compare yourself to an animal, which would it be and why?
A wolf: I am comfortable in both groups and alone; I am willing to both lead and follow (be the teacher or the student); Most people find me scary, but those that know me well, know that as long as I have fed and am not hungry, I will be your best friend and no blood will be shed. Also, it is my spirit animal; it must have chosen me for a reason.

4. What do you like to do in your free time?
Read, write, journal, quiet things that can’t be rushed

5. What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
I deal with my husband every single day. He thinks he is very funny, He is not, and I don’t have a sense of humour. BUT my youngest came to me the other morning to explain to me how she had held her eyes open while she sneezed and they hadn’t popped out, so I must be wrong…

6. What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
The Big Bang Theory with my eldest daughter.  A little comic relief and something we could do and watch together. And I am also re-watching Gilmore Girls, which I love. It is completely relatable, that search for self and independence and the not belonging with the people you were born to, being excluded, feeling not heard and rejected, but also finding your people and learning how to belong with yourself. They also talk, read, and drink coffee in copious amounts. When we are anxious, we tend to watch shows or listen to familiar music over and over again. We know it and there are no surprises, so our nervous system gets a chance to relax.

7. What’s your favorite drink?
Water and coffee. Not in the same glass and neither ever cold.

8. If a penguin wearing a sombrero walks through your front door, what does he say and why is he here?
Hello, peace be on this house. I love your country of sun and shine, but please point me to the nearest holder of ice cubes and tuna

About Marlise Els

Marlise loves triple tall cap coffee and has a sweet tooth for  desserts which makes her booty shake!

Marlise ELs

1. What is your favorite Yoga style and pose?
My favorite yoga style is yoga nidra and my favorite yoga pose is Savasana ( Okay I’m just
kidding!) There’s absolutely nothing wrong with either that style or the pose, I am all for deep
relaxation but I do prefer something that’s a bit more mentally and physically challenging. I’ll
have to say my favorite style is a combination of Hatha yoga and Vinyasa yoga. My favorite
yoga pose is by far the dancer pose and any variation of it.

2. How did you get interested in Yoga?
A friend of mine suggested that I look up Tara Stiles Yoga on YouTube. I got really into it and
started practicing at home daily. I started to develop a true passion for yoga and decided to study
yoga and become a qualified yoga instructor.

3. If you could compare yourself to an animal, which would it be and why?
I would say a cat. Cats are cute but yet feisty. They enjoy the company, care, love and
attention of their owners but they don’t ever fully become dependent of that. They live a
comfortable life and roam freely.

4. What do you like to do in your free time?
Well now that’s a given! Yoga obviously! I am very consistent in my yoga training and I use
my free time to improve my yoga skills or help my clients improve their yoga skills by doing one
on one training with them. Yoga isn’t just a job to me. Yoga is my passion, it’s what drives me in
life and through yoga I am able to connect with like minded people and develop amazing
friendships.

5. What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
Thinking…..thinking….thinking…..okay nothing comes to mind. That’s a bit of a vibe kill ??

6. What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
Zumbo’s just desserts on Netflix. I totally do have a sweet tooth and I love yummy mouth
watering and beautiful desserts.

7. What’s your favorite drink?
Triple tall cap from Seattle Coffee. ( For those of you who don’t understand coffee lingo, this
is a medium sized cappuccino with three shots of espresso in it.) I don’t have sugar with it
because I enjoy very strong coffee and I get my sugar fix from desserts ??.

8. If a penguin wearing a sombrero walks through your front door, what does he say and why is he here?
The penguin says hi and asks if I want to join his new dance crew lead by Mumble from
Happy Feet. My answer is yes! Let’s go shake some booty.

Where to find me? I am situated in Durban and teach yoga classes twice a week at the Bluff Eco
Park. Click on over to my website for more details www.hathayogabluff.co.za , you can also find

What is the best Yoga & Pilates mat to use?

I often get asked what mat I use for Yoga and Pilates? Students wanting to know what the best mat is to use and what they should look out for in a good quality mat?

I don’t believe that there’s a right or wrong here, it’s all really about personal preference. Yoga mats range in thickness: typically on the thinner end of the scale between 3-4mm, and on the thicker end between 5 – 6mm.  I found that when I started yoga my preference was for a thinner mat – I just felt more grounded and secure on the mat, but this changed as my practice deepended.  The more time I spent on the mat, the longer I started playing and the more adventurous I got on the mat, the more I started feeling my bones (think knees, elbows, hip & bum bones, even my the vertebrae – especially during spinal rolls) – a bit more padding was required.

Unfortunately when transitioning to a thicker mat, I found balancing poses a lot more challenging – I often felt like I was sinking into the thick end of a plush carpet and struggled to find my grounding.  I tried out a host of mats over the years, and the problem I found with a lot of them, is that as soon as I started gripping into the mat, they would start flaking and peeling – leaving me with a sorry-ass looking mat that looked like a mouse had been nibbling at it.  This resulted in an often uncomfortable wobbly ride, which only worsened as I started sweating on the mat during more rigorous routines – slip and slide (and not in a good way).

Finding the Manduka Pro mat was like coming home for me – I finally found a mat that checked all my boxes:

This 6mm mat not only provided the cushioning I was looking for (doubling up perfectly for both Yoga and Pilates), but the dense rubber weave still felt like solid “ground” beneath me – balancing poses felt a lot more intuitive.

The mat’s closed-cell surface makes cleaning a breeze, but also appeals to the OCD germaphobe in me – it keeps moisture (think sweat and water when cleaning) from seeping into the mat and providing a breeding ground for bacteria.

This mat has incredible grip! Not only in terms of the mat itself not moving around on the floor once you’ve laid it out, but also in terms of how secure you actually feel on the mat as you begin moving around and sweating on it – the more you use the mat the better the grip becomes.

This mat comes with a lifetime guarantee to not fade, flake or peel.  Sure, I had to spend a bit more but it’s an investment I was more than happy to make.

When I recently started looking around local for suppliers of Manduka I was pleasantly surprised to discover Yoga Essentials. Their pricing was reasonable and didn’t sky-rocket, as did a lot of suppliers, post COVID-19 lockdown.  Their service was friendly, helpful  and super efficient.  In fact I was a little blown away by how fast I received my product. As they are an online service based in Durban, and I’m situated in Cape Town,  I thought it was going to be an uphill battle to receive my order.  I placed my order late on a Friday afternoon and imagine my surprise when I received it first thing Monday morning. I was also able to track my parcel the whole time from pick-up to delivery – great for peace of mind.

If you are serious about your playtime on the mat, I would definitely recommend checking out Manduka (it’s the only mat I use).  They have a host of mat options to choose from, even providing a “Long” length mat for those graced with taller frames:-)

That’s it for now – see you all for playtime on the mat😉

Till next time – Keep it Light😘
