SUP Yoga Special Feature – Penny Slein Yoga

Penny Slein Yoga

This week we feature Penny Slein Yoga from Durban, we spoke with owner and Yoga Teacher Penny Slein to get some insight on how they do their SUP Yoga practice.|

Penny Slein Yoga

How did you discover Sup Yoga?
My daughter and I were out supping on a calm beautiful day, the kind of day where you can just lay on the board out at sea and become immersed in the wonder of the ocean. We figured why not do some chaturanga and downward dog. It became fairly obviously very quickly that its an excellent way to really activate the deep core muscles as you have to continually stabilize yourself.

Penny Slein YogaWhere do you teach?
I teach fun group or 1-2-1 lessons on the Point Waterfront canals, out at sea and at my home in Durban North.

What Yoga do you do on a SUP?
On the SUP you really can do hatha, vinyasa and yin.

Benefits of SUP Yoga which might not be found in the usual practice?
SUP yoga provides an unstable base so your mind body connection has to be stronger so that you can fully engage and distribute your weight evenly. It makes being present easier. You have no time to think about any drama as you are focused on trying to not fall in the water. Although, that’s not a problem either as you can cool off. It’s a great way to test your co-ordination, heighten proprioception
(sense of self-movement and body position, sometimes described as the “sixth sense” – Jaina) engage the stabilizing muscles, strengthen your core and improve posture.

Some features of SUP Yoga unique to it?
What makes it unique are all the above factors plus being outdoors, in the sunshine and fresh air.

What kind of person does SUP Yoga (if there is any type)?
Anyone of any age can do SUP yoga and you can wear what-ever you want. It is a fun filled down to earth practice that focuses more on having fun than anything else.

Penny Slein YogaAnd then of course a humorous anecdote about something that happened to you or a student/friend doing SUP Yoga.?  😊
I have somersaulted off my board a few times but hey, you have to laugh and enjoy all of it. Plus…you never know when the dolphins are going to come out

About Nana Wen

Nana is a creative bird of paradise  who likes to Zumba with a penguin!

Nana Wen

1. What is your favorite Yoga style and pose?
As a Gemini, I like to explore different physical movements at different pace and levels– ranging from general HIIT, to Ashtanga series, to Iyengar, to functional movements, to Tai Chi, to Pilates, to fascia flossing. To me, having variety is healthy – so I guess im just my own style? Lol. In terms of energetics and mindful practices, I embrace teachings from Taoism, Buddhism and Ayurveda.
At the moment, my pose is Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulderstand) using a sofa 😊

2. How did you get interested in Yoga?
I was on a brink of burn out and losing sanity after caring for my first born without much physical support – I started doing online videos at home in the beginning, but felt so good after a few weeks I decided to look for a physical class – I needed a peaceful yoga environment for time out.

3. If you could compare yourself to an animal, which would it be and why?
Hmm. I guess it would be some colourful birds of paradise? I like being creative – exploring through movement and painting, adventurous and free, and possessing sharp eyes

4. What do you like to do in your free time?
Zumba (and dance fitness), Painting, Hiking and walking in forests, having tea/coffee with friends that share the same frequency as me.

Having to use a funnel neck sweatshirt to cover my face while waiting on the road side as I forget to wear a mask. So embarrassing!

My Octopus Teacher on Netflix – it was recommended by friends.

About Marrion Clarke

Marrion is a wise owl, but has no idea why there is a penguin on her doorstep!

1. What is your favorite Yoga style and pose?
This is one of the reasons I will always stay curious about this ancient practice.
There is a variety of styles, and my preferred choice would be dependent on my mood,
and same would go for the asana I prefer….it all depends on where I am on my
personal yogic journey.

2. How did you get interested in Yoga?
I needed to make lifestyle changes in order to find me again…I decided to do my YTT
in this year of slaying those dragons. The change it brought for me keeps me passionate
in sharing the wisdom with like-minded spirits.

3. If you could compare yourself to an animal, which would it be and why?
I have always found myself intrigued by owls. They are widely recognized as observers.
Owls employ their deeper spiritual senses to guide them and have a deeply philosophical
bent.

4. What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time you will find me in nature with my people. Travelling, family, art and music
is my soul food.

5. What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
There have been so many online moments during lockdown where I have had to laugh at
myself. The children’s classes in particular kept the humour going…I continue to learn from
the little people as they show me the lighter side of life.

6. What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
I have found humour an excellent therapist during this pandemic, and spent many happy
hours watching “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”. Comic Jerry Seinfeld hosts this
unique series that feature vintage cars, hilarious conversations and you guessed it….coffee!

7. What’s your favorite drink?
A good chai tea and coffee

8. If a penguin wearing a sombrero walks through your front door, what does he say and why is he here?
I have no idea why this penguin made it to my doorstep or how, but after a year like 2020
nothing surprises me anymore….😉

Purring through the Universe

About Louise van der Walt

Louise is a busy bee who veges out on popcorn after looking for her next BFF (just bring her something exotic to fill her tummy).

Louise van der Walt

1. What is your favorite Yoga style and pose?
I am eclectic & love to mix things up. I do not take myself too seriously, so try to keep it light on the mat & have fun every time I come to the mat.  In a pinch I would say vinyasa- go with the flow:-)
Favorite pose? Ooh that’s a tough one, let’s go with Crow. I always feel light & carefree in this pose (and each time I go into the pose I remember how amazingly kick-ass I felt the first time I actually nailed it).

2. How did you get interested in Yoga?
Needed to find my Zen – juggling family life & a busy corporate schedule was draining me out & messing with my mojo.

3. If you could compare yourself to an animal, which would it be and why?
Hummingbird – always busy & on the go – I can also eat half my body weight & drink eight times my body mass in liquid (so I have to keep busy or I’d blow up like a blowfish).

4. What do you like to do in your free time?
On a veg out, hide away from the world day – definitely eat copious amounts of popcorn & binge watch Netflix (or read a trashy romance novel) until my eyes bug out.

5. What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
I’m constantly doing silly things & making a bit of a tool of myself, so I’ve learnt to take it with a pinch of salt, roll with the punches & chillax (BREATHE).

6. What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
“Jamestown” – awesome period series, full of strong women, overcoming incredible odds to “make it work” while forging a strong sense of self.

7. What’s your favorite drink?
I am a teetotaler, with a propensity towards exciting tea blends (go figure). Hibiscus, peppermint & ginger/lemon are always staples in my tea caddy (no ceylon – far too bitter- herbal is the way to my tummy). Hit me up with something exotic & you’re my new BFF.

8. If a penguin wearing a sombrero walks through your front door, what does he say and why is he here?
Cricky, I’m terrible with jokes – I always mess up the punch line, here goes nothing:
Shuffle, shuffle, waddle, waddle, front door bangs open, penguin squeaks: “40 below outside, froze the freaking worm in my tequila – penguin salutations required STAT to heat things up”

About Rona Joubert

Rona made a remarkable recovery, but a student claimed that books were a burden!

1. What is your favorite Yoga style and pose?
I enjoy a traditional vinyasa flow with variations according to my mood on the day. Favorite pose varies between lizard/pigeon or a headstand, depending on how balanced my day is feeling.

2. How did you get interested in Yoga?
I became very ill about 2yrs ago, after going through some traumatic life changes, and I wasn’t allowed to do any form of cardio exercises. This was the perfect opportunity for me to try yoga, something I have always longed to do. I was hooked after the 1st class and completed my 200hr TT 6months later!

3. If you could compare yourself to an animal, which would it be and why?
I would love to say a swan… But I am a true Taurus and some days I feel about as graceful as a bull on my yoga mat!

4. What do you like to do in your free time?
I love hiking in the mountains, long walks by the ocean, reading a really good book.

5. What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
I was teaching at a local Christian school. Checking homework books before my teens go home for the day. One 16yr old girl’s book was missing.. Called her over to ask what happened to her book.. Instant blank look, but smoke was coming out her ears, thinking of a quick excuse… Then… “Miss…. Miss, Jesus took it away from me cause it was a burden…” 🤣😂 Student – 100 ; Teacher – 0 !!!

6. What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
Down To Earth by Zac Effron. I loved the trailer and was totally hooked after watching only the intro of the 1st episode! Such a heart warming series, inspired to see celebrities walking into a deeper truth and caring so much about people and the environment.

7. What’s your favorite drink?
A biiiiigggg cupacino!!

8. If a penguin wearing a sombrero walks through your front door, what does he say and why is he here?
“Ola Chicka! I am here to take you to our secret beach in Baja, where we belly flop into the pool on purpose and drink cherry flavored mojitos all day long! 😎”
