ANUVITTASANA / STANDING BACKBEND @corvus_yoga Start in mountain pose, making sure you have equal weight in both your feet. Ensuring weight is equally distributed throughout the soles of your feet and toes. Gently motion your hips forward, activating the thighs and gluteus as you do. Start sending the torso backwards into an arch, making sure you lengthen up through your spine as you go. Keep the head looking forward by tucking the chin, or if it feels safe release it all the way back. You may make use of your hands on your lower back for extra support, having the fingers point down as in ustrasana/camel pose, or you can take your arms overhead like in this picture for a more advanced stretch. Coming out of this, keep the legs and gluteus strong as you tuck your chin and slowly lift your head, bringing your spine in line with your hips again. A beautiful heart opener. @soul_essence_yoga ~ TREE POSE/ VRKSASANA ~ This is a foundational balancing posture in Yoga that is probably one of the first postures taught in your first few classes. The foundational aspect also plays a vital role in tree pose: build your posture from the ground up. Your foot is your foundation here, and without awareness on how you're rooting down through the foot, your foundation will be compromised. For people with flat feet (balancing becomes difficult): lift the toes of the lower foot to strengthen your foot arch then keep your awareness on maintaining an arch while you lower your toes slowly. This posture can definitely be affected daily by your state of mind, energy level & the emotions present. Generally when you have mental or emotional imbalance/turmoil/trauma this physical balance can also become a challenge. Balancing takes practice, practice, practice to build muscle memory; a calm, centred mind and slow, smooth breathing. The benefits of this posture include: • Aids a sense of grounding & stability • Strengthening of the legs, knees, ankles and the foot ligaments and tendons • Strengthening of the core and stimulates digestive organs • Opening of the hips and groin • Improving posture, balance, co-ordination, concentration & body awareness • Lengthening of the spine through traction & neutral pelvis • Aids in slowing down and calming the nervous system • Aids in slower, fuller breathing • Increases gentle confidence and self-esteem Tip: to practice balancing for a stronger Tree Pose, stand on one leg while brushing teeth or prepping your meals daily😊 #soulessenceyoga #yogatips #yogateacher #yoga101 #yogatutorials #yogastudio #yogaclass #yogaforeveryone #yogaforbeginners #yogaasana #treepose #vrksasana #yogasouthafrica #yogaessentials #yogiverse #balance #stability #strength #focus #co-ordination #mentalawareness #bodyawareness #connection #concentration #rootdown #groundyourself
